On December 1, 2016 the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF Panel) published the minutes of the first meeting of its Working Group (WG) on BPA assessment protocol. The meeting was held on November 10-11, 2016 in Parma, Italy.

In April 2016, EFSA announced that it will start a reevaluation of the safety of bisphenol A (BPA, CAS 80-05-7) in 2017 and complete a final Scientific Opinion in 2018 (FPF reported). During the first meeting, the WG discussed the preparation of the BPA reevaluation. EFSA’s work methods, the respective roles of the CEF Panel and the WG members, EFSA’s mandate to develop a BPA protocol, and the EFSA Prometheus project (FPF reported) were presented.

Further, the WG did an initial brainstorming on the structure and content of the protocol for the reassessment of BPA, considering the methodology of EFSA’s previous Scientific Opinion on BPA of 2015 (FPF reported), as well as the protocol developed for EFSA’s Scientific Opinion on isoflavones of 2015. Individual tasks and deadlines were defined for the WG members.

The next meeting of the WG is scheduled for December 12, 2016 by phone conference.
