On May 15, 2018, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF Panel) published the minutes of the third meeting of its Working Group (WG) on Phthalates which was held on April 18-19, 2018 in Parma, Italy.
During the meeting, EFSA’s DATA Unit presented “data on occurrence of phthalates extracted from the EFSA Occurrence Database” to the phthalates WG. The WG then discussed different approaches for assessing dietary exposure to phthalates, as well as the expert feedback it received regarding “the screening of literature and appraisal of studies.” Lastly, the WG addressed general considerations on the scope, content, and structure of the updated opinion on the safety of dibutyl phthalate (DBP, CAS 84-74-2), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP, CAS 85-68-7), and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP, CAS 117-81-7) for use in food contact plastics.
The next meeting of the phthalates WG is scheduled to be held on June 4, 2018.
