On February 6, 2017 the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF Panel) published the latest update of the meeting minutes of its Working Group (WG) on Recycling Plastics. The 15th meeting of the plastics recycling WG was held on January 17-18, 2017 in Parma, Italy. During the meeting, the WG discussed the draft opinion on the recycling process “Märkische Faser” intended to produce recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) for food contact uses. EFSA received the mandate to evaluate the recycling process in February 2016 and has requested additional data two times since then. The WG noted that further clarifications are needed and EFSA requested the applicant to provide additional data once more. The revised draft opinion will be scheduled for rediscussion in the WG.

The next meeting of the plastics recycling WG is scheduled to be held on March 6-7, 2017 in Parma, Italy.
