On May 24, 2017 the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF Panel) published the latest update of the meeting minutes of its Working Group (WG) on Recycling Plastics. The 17th meeting of the plastics recycling WG was held on May 16, 2017 in Parma, Italy. During the meeting, the WG discussed the draft opinion and noted changes for the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling process Veroniki Ecogrup SRL (Starlinger deCon technology). A revised draft opinion will be prepared and scheduled for discussion and possible adoption.

Further, the WG noted that it has become aware of “processes to print directly onto the outer surface of PET bottles.” The WG will deliberate whether “such processes and other technological innovations could have an impact on the PET recycling chain.”
