On October 31, 2017, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF Panel) published the latest update of the meeting minutes of its Working Group (WG) on Recycling Plastics. The 19th meeting of the plastics recycling WG was held on October 9-10, 2017 in Athens, Greece.

During the meeting, the WG discussed the draft opinions on the following polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling processes: ‘Gneuss Kunststofftechnik (Gneuss 1 technology),’ ‘Gneuss Kunststofftechnik (Gneuss 2 technology),’ ‘BTB (PET direct iV+ technology),’ and ‘Envases Ureña.’ For all of these processes, the WG requires and will request clarifications from the applicants to finalize the opinions. The revised draft opinions will be scheduled for rediscussion. Further, the WG discussed and noted changes for the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polypropylene (PP) recycling process ‘Morssinkhof Plastics.’ “The revised draft opinion will be scheduled for discussion and possible adoption,” the minutes read. The discussion of two more PET recycling processes, ‘Linpac Packaging GmbH (LINPAC technology)’ and ‘RecyPET Hungaria,’ had to be postponed due to lack of time. Lastly, the WG was informed by European Commission (EC) representative Bastiaan Schupp about the EC’s ongoing activities regarding the recycling of plastics.

The next meeting of the plastics recycling WG is scheduled to be held on December 4-5, 2017 in Parma, Italy.
