The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) Panel on food Contact materials, Enzymes and Processing aids (CEP Panel) published the minutes of the 30th meeting of its Working Group on bisphenol A (WG-BPA) re-evaluation held on March 24, 2020. During the meetings, the experts further discussed the approach used for weighting evidence from animal and human studies as well as the integration of evidence using cardiotoxicity as an example to clarify open issues. The next meeting was scheduled to be held on May 6-7, 2020 by teleconference.
The EFSA CEP Panel also published the minutes of the 13th and 14th meeting of its Working Group on Food Contact Materials (WG-FCM), which were held on March 18-19 and April 1-2, 2020. During the meetings, the group continued discussions and revisions of a draft opinion on the prioritization exercise for substances without a specific migration limit (SML) (EFSA-Q-2019-00150). Focus was placed on substances identified as being high priority, and the results of in silico predictions for substances within the medium priority group were also discussed. After receiving additional information from the applicant, the WG discussed changes to the draft opinion on the use of benzophenone-3,3-4,4-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (EFSA-Q-2018-01007). Both of these revised drafts have been scheduled for discussion and potential adoption by the CEP Panel. The WG further continued discussions on the safety of styrene (FCM 193) (EFSA-Q-2019-00686) in food contact materials. The next meeting is scheduled to take place on May 26-28, 2020.
The EFSA CEP Panel has also published the minutes of the 13th meeting of its Working Group on Recycling Plastics (WG-RP), which was held on March 31, 2020. During the meeting, the group discussed and noted changes on the draft opinion of the PET to PET Recycling Österreich (Starlinger HDPE) process (EFSA-Q-2019-00296). Additional information was determined to be needed to complete the risk assessment, and the evaluation has been suspended pending additional information from the applicant.
