In a letter submitted in June 2013 to the European Commission, the president of the Endocrine Society William F. Young, Jr., writes, “Endocrinologists bring a necessary perspective to the discussion of endocrine-disrupting chemicals”. The letter calls upon the European Commission to use the expertise of endocrinologists in the deliberations about endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that are currently taking place. In June 2009 the society published a scientific statement summarizing the current state of knowledge on EDCs. The letter calls again for the application of fundamental principles of endocrinology in the evaluation of EDCs.
