On June 19, 2019, Boma Brown-West and Michelle Mauthe Harvey published an article on the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) + Business blog identifying five key strategies that food manufacturers and retailers could use to address toxic chemicals in packaging in order to improve the quality of products, product recyclability, and public health. These strategies include (1) setting new packaging specifications for suppliers, (2) verifying compliance, (3) tracking progress, (4) starting precompetitive collaborations, and (5) applying a pilot for strategy development. The authors recommended that especially companies that have signed the Ellen MacArthur global commitment (FPF reported) to tackle plastic waste and pollution need to now work on making a change.
