On May 15, 2014 the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) published a press report (pdf) on health and environmental issues relating to manufactured nanomaterials. The report recommends the development of multidisciplinary projects aimed to increase knowledge of nanomaterial characteristics and dangers encompassing a product’s entire lifecycle. It further suggests a regulatory framework allowing the identification of nanomaterials and their use in consumer products. ANSES considers that nanomaterials may cross physiological barriers and points to toxic effects of certain nanomaterials. Thus the Agency recommends stimulating research and strengthening the European regulatory framework on nanomaterials.
