The German non-governmental environmental organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) announced the start of a new project aiming to reduce the consumption of single-use plastic bags in November 2013. As stated in the press release, the DUH considers the high consumption of single-use plastic bags in Germany characteristic of today’s throw-away society. The project shall draw attention to the problem, and suggest recommendations for policy, retail and consumers throughout Germany. The aim is to replace single-use plastic bags, which are also used for the packaging for fresh, loose fruit and vegetables, with multiple use bags over time.
