In a press release published on October 29, 2019, the European Container Glass Federation (FEVE) reported that the “collection for recycling rate for glass packaging grew to the record rate of 76% in 2017,” as averaged for 28 member states of the European Union (EU). In 2016, glass packaging recycling was at 74% (FPF reported). This steady achievement, FEVE emphasized, “make[s] the glass packaging manufacturing industry an authentic and well-functioning Circular Economy.”
“Used glass is the most important resource for bottle-to-bottle production” and “glass recycling enables the container glass industry to dramatically reduce its environmental footprint by saving energy and raw materials,” FEVE explained. It further specified that the 160 “glass plants [located in the EU] deliver more than half of their products within 300km and more than 70% of raw materials travel less than 300 km.” The organization is committed to attaining “even higher rates” of glass packaging recycling in the future.
