On August 11, 2020, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung, BfR) launched a new guideline for assessment of health risks.

The BfR has a legal mandate to assess the human health risks resulting from food and feed, substances, microorganisms, products and processes, to inform about the possible, identified and assessed risks, and to recommend necessary measures to minimize or avoid risk. A transparent presentation and documentation of the entire assessment process constitutes an important contribution to BfR’s risk communication strategy.

The presented guideline aims to ensure the consistent practical implementation of BfR’s risk assessment principles and thus serves as a quality assurance for risk assessments and health statements issued by the BfR.
