On June 25, 2013 the Los Angeles City Council adopted a ban of single use plastic bags with 9 to 1 votes. Retail stores making more than $ 2 million per year or occupying more than 10 000 square feet retail space have to comply with the ban by January 1, 2014. Smaller stores will have to comply by July 1, 2014. In the United States, single use plastic bags have previously been banned under 75 Californian municipal and community laws as well as in various towns in Massachusetts.
