On January 17, 2014 Linda McAvan and Åsa Westlund of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists & Democrats in the European Parliament (S&D) asked the Council of the European Union to push the European Commission (EC) to deliver the delayed criteria on endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Earlier in January, after missing the deadline for criteria in December 2013, Commission representatives announced that the EDC criteria would be delayed by at least one year. In a press release published by S&D, Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Westlund states that the EC’s justification that there was still scientific disagreement was not convincing in the face of independent reports by the EC as well as the World Health Organization (WHO). Furthermore, MEP McAvan contends that EU legislation of EDCs is needed to protect citizens’ health.
