In an article published on October 17, 2014 Monika Tönnießen, product safety manager at the company Henkel, discusses the mineral oil problematic in food contact materials (FCMs). Contamination with mineral oils may occur at different levels of the supply chain, including the transport of unprocessed food stuffs, she states. Tönnießen explains that from a toxicological point of view one distinguishes Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons (MOAH), which are considered to have carcinogenic fraction, from other less hazardous types of mineral oils. She contends that the mineral oil components cannot usually be completed removed, thus the use of efficient barrier materials is appropriate in order to protect foods from contamination.
