On October 5, 2018, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes and Processing Aids (CEP Panel) published the minutes of the first meeting of its Working Group (WG) on Phthalates which was held on September 17, 2018, in Parma, Italy.

During the meeting, EFSA’s DATA Unit presented “[a]n update on the preliminary analysis of data on occurrence of phthalates extracted from the EFSA Occurrence Database.” The WG then discussed different approaches to assessing dietary exposure to phthalates. Further, the WG discussed the expert feedback it received regarding “the screening of literature and appraisal of studies” for updating EFSA’s scientific opinion on the safety of dibutyl phthalate (DBP, CAS 84-74-2), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP, CAS 85-68-7), and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP, CAS 117-81-7) for use in food contact plastics. Lastly, “[g]eneral considerations on the scope, content and structure of the opinion were raised.”

The next meeting of the phthalates WG is scheduled to be held on October 8, 2018, by phone conference.
