On June 10, 2014 the Food Packaging Forum published a new context article on the use of bioplastics in food contact materials, addressing different types, applications, toxicity and regulation. The distinctions made between biobased polymers, biodegradable plastics, oxo-biodegradable plastic and bio-nanocomposites are explained and different types of bioplastics including polylactide (PLA), biobased polyethylene furanoate (PEF) and aliphatic (co-)polyesters are detailed. The article summarizes some of the research that has been carried out on the toxicity of nanomaterials and discusses regulations and standards applicable to bioplastics.
