On July 9, 2014 the advocacy group for chemical safety CHEM Trust sent a letter to EU Health Commissioner Toni Borg demanding better regulation of food contact materials (FCMs). CHEM Trust’s Executive Director Michael Warhurst reports in an article about the letter which points out the gap in EU regulation regarding non-plastic food contact materials. Based on findings of a recent study by the Food Packaging Forum published on July 7, 2014, the group points to the substantial number of chemicals with hazardous properties legally used in FCMs. CHEM Trust affirms that it is important to protect public health by strengthening the relevant regulation as soon as possible and is now awaiting a response from the European Commission.
