In an opinion piece published on August 6, 2014 Rajasree Pai, endocrinologist, raised concerns about the use of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in consumer products, in particular the continued use of the antimicrobial triclosan. He criticizes that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to seek additional safety data on triclosan and will only determine whether the substance can be Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) in 2016. Pai supports a preventive and precautionary approach to EDCs and calls for the labeling of EDC-containing products.
