Heidi Mitchell, journalist for the Wall Street Journal published an opinion piece on April 19, 2013 in which she urges using only inert materials for heating food in a microwave. Rolf Halden, director for the Center for Environmental Security at the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University is quoted in the article, stating that heating food in plastic containers is an unnecessary potential source of exposure to harmful chemicals, and that this exposure should be avoided. He points to the connection between chemicals in plastic food contact materials and chronic diseases, including cancer, obesity and early onset puberty. In particular, food containers showing discoloration or deformities should no longer be used to store food, according to Halden.
