On June 18, 2014 the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC) published a report (pdf) on opportunities and challenges of nanotechnology. In the preface of the report written by David Azolay and Baskut Tuncak from the Center for International Environmental Law, SSNC-president Mikael Karlsson points out that the EU should urgently adopt a harmonized definition of nanomaterials, and that Sweden should develop a national strategy for dealing with the safety of nanomaterials and initiate a national inventory for nanomaterials. Further, Karlsson concludes that the EU should extend its support for the Strategic Approach to the International Chemicals Management’s (SAICM) policy area of nanomaterials and that Sweden should work towards the establishment of an international nano-council within SAICM. The report also includes an indicative table of nano-applications.
