On February 22, 2019, law firm Keller and Heckman LLP reprinted an article originally published in Food Safety Magazine that reviews the development of plastic packaging towards a circular economy. The article focuses on the past two decades and outlines a number of industry initiatives, government action plans, and economic conditions that have played a role in shaping (but also potentially hindering) the recyclability and reuse of plastic packaging. Author George Misko specifically references and quotes statements from government representatives regarding the European Union’s Plastics Strategy (FPF reported) and provides insight on the reported low quality of plastic recyclates available, including in relation to China’s recent ban on importing plastic waste (FPF reported). Looking ahead, the article highlights that “meeting the goals aimed at making plastic packaging part of a circular economy will not be easy.”
