The European Food Safety authority (EFSA) authorized the polypropylene (PP) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) recycling process “CO.N.I.P” for 100 % use for food contact. In the scientific opinion published April 9, 2013 the EFSA Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF) states that the process fulfills the requirements outlined in regulation EC 282/2008 on recycled plastic materials intended to come into contact with foods. The process is a closed product loop recycling process of single use crates intended to contain whole fruits and vegetables at room temperature and below.

The scientific opinion was requested by the Ministero della Salute, Italy upon submission of a request by the National Plastic Packaging Consortium (CO.N.I.P) (RECYC040).
