In the study carried out by various German research institutes identified printing inks from packaging in food stuff. The presence of plasticizers prohibited from FCMs as well as the presence of photo initiators, mineral oils and solvents was measured. The report expressed particular concern regarding polyolefins, which have no relevant barrier function to migratory printing ink components. The study expresses concern that printing industry is not sufficiently aware of the hazards associated with migration from food contact materials. 65 potentially migratory compounds were identified and 41 of those were measurable in food stuffs. 20 of these substances have not been toxicologically evaluated.
