On September 29, 2014, the European Commission (EC) launched an online public consultation that aims to help define criteria for endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Specific criteria for the determination of endocrine disrupting properties of substances are required by the biocidal and plant protection products regulation EC 1107/2009. Due to potentially significant socio-economic impacts linked to how the criteria will be defined, the EC is required to perform an impact assessment and gather public views.

The European Commissioner for the Environment Janez Potočnik stressed that EDCs have been the subject of an extensive debate recently and not only among researchers, but also among general public. The criteria used to identify EDCs need to ensure sufficient protection and give industry the certainty it requires. The involvement of citizens and stakeholders can assist us to make an informed decision, Potočnik emphasized.

Contributions can be submitted until January 16, 2015.
