In an article published on May 8, 2017 the Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging (APEAL) released a report on steel packaging recycling in 2015 in Europe (covering 28 European Member States together with Switzerland and Norway). Record-high average rates of 77.5% in 2015 represent a 1.5% increase compared to 2014, and correspond to over 2.7 million tons of recycled steel.

Steel packaging has the highest recycling rate compared to all other packaging materials, thus providing “a real example of the circular economy at work,” APEAL stated. The industry association is committed to meeting a self-imposed target of 80% average rates of steel packaging recycling in Europe by 2020.
