In an article published on June 6, 2018, the Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging (APEAL) informed that recycling of steel packaging in Europe has reached a record 79.5% in 2016, being a 2% increase compared to 2015. This means that “for every 10 items of steel packaging put on the European market, close to 8 have been collected, effectively recycled and made available for the manufacture of new steel products,” APEAL emphasized, adding that this makes steel “Europe’s most recycled packaging material for the 12th consecutive year.”

Steel is “a permanent material” that can be “recycled forever with no loss of quality.” With the high recycling rate reached in 2016, the steel packaging industry is “well on track” for the self-imposed objective of reaching 80% recycling by 2020, APEAL concluded.
