On May 12, 2022, Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA) announced a new application procedure for the use of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) in food contact materials. The application process is similar to that of the European Food Safety Authority. According to the TFDA, “the safety assessment of remanufactured [PET] pellets shall comply with the safety evaluation principles of the EU or US.”

Each application will first undergo an administrative review to check the completeness of the application followed by an expert review. Experts will review the safety assessment data provided by manufacturers, and then those with sufficient safety information will be reviewed once more by The Ministry of Food Risk Assessment Advisory Council for any final comments. Rejected applications can be resubmitted.
