On January 17, 2022, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) announced the addition of four chemicals to its Candidate List of substances of very high concern (SVHCs). ECHA says 6,6′-di-tert-butyl-2,2′-methylenedi-p-cresol (CAS 119-47-1) is used in rubbers, lubricants, adhesives, inks, and fuels, while tris(2-methoxyethoxy)vinylsilane is used in rubbers, plastics, and sealants. According to the Food Packaging Forum’s Food Contact Chemicals Database (FCCdb), both are used in food contact applications while ECHA lists the other two substances as used in cosmetics and lubricants. The FCCs were added to the Candidate List for their adverse effects on reproductive health.

Both chemicals are classified in the FCCdb as substances of potential concern: 6,6′-di-tert-butyl-2,2′-methylenedi-p-cresol due to being a potential endocrine disrupting chemical and tris(2-methoxyethoxy)vinylsilane for being a predicted environmental health hazard.

All EU producers of these chemicals or suppliers of products containing these chemicals above a concentration of 0.1% by weight must provide safety information to consumers for safe use of the chemicals and/or products. Companies are also required to notify ECHA under REACH and under the Waste Framework Directive for inclusion in the SCIP database (FPF reported). There are currently 223 chemicals on ECHA’s Candidate List.
