On June 24, 2014 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued 4 final and draft nanotechnology guidance documents covering the areas of food, cosmetics and animal feed. The guidances are intended to provide greater clarity for industry, according to the FDA. In the press release, FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg stated that the overall goal is to “ensure transparent and predictable regulatory pathways, grounded in the best available science, in support of the responsible development of nanotechnology products”. Though the agency makes no categorical statement on nanotechnology’s danger or safety, the guidance encourage manufacturers to consult with the FDA before marketing their products. The draft guidance on animal feed is open for comments until September 10, 2014.
