On April 7, 2020, the non-governmental organization Zero Waste Europe will hold a webinar on the topic of the COVID-19 pandemic and zero waste policies and strategies within Europe. Specifically, the webinar will “examine whether governments can simultaneously prioritize the health and protection of their citizens, whilst also progressing towards their local zero waste agenda.” This includes answering:

  • if a shift back to single-use containers makes sense, the scientific evidence on the topic, and solutions for these concerns going forward;
  • how the pandemic is affecting waste management in Europe including a review of regulatory measures being taken and whether or not they are in line with broader EU waste and circular economy goals; and
  • what citizens, businesses, and municipalities can do to protect one another while also leading a zero waste lifestyle.

Panelists for the discussion will include Paolo Marengo from the Association of Cities and Regions for sustainable Resource management (ACR+), Enzo Favoino from Zero Waste Europe, and Jane Muncke from the Food Packaging Forum. Registration for the webinar is free, and a recording will be made publicly available afterward.

More information related to SARS-CoV-2 and packaging is available on the Food Packaging Forum’s resources page.
