The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that it will hold an expert consultation to inform the development of a new report on the human health risks from exposure to microplastics in the environment on March 2-3, 2020 in Geneva, Switzerland. The organization wrote that it “wishes to assess human health risks arising from exposure to microplastic particles from the environment, identify research needs and define the scope of the future work of WHO on microplastic particles.” This effort expands recently completed work to develop an August 2019 report on microplastics in drinking water (FPF reported). The WHO is calling for qualified experts to apply no later than January 19, 2020 to join the consultation. The selected experts will “ensure the completeness of the report and data reviewed, discuss and resolve any divergence of data interpretation and/or expert opinion included in the scope of the report, and set the scope of the future work of WHO on microplastic.”
