The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), U.S. published its program to research the Health and Safety Effects of Engineered Nanomaterials, called “ONE nano”. The strategic research program aims to increase our understanding of the interaction of nanomaterials with the body and the environment. It further intends to develop models estimating human exposure to nanomaterials and to assess the health impact of such materials. The initiative forms part of the support extended to the National Nanotechnology Initiative in the U.S..

Nanomaterials have a variety of application in consumer products. They are also used in food packaging, for example as antimicrobial agents.
