In May 2014, printing inks manufacturer Sun Chemical presented its 4th edition of “Designing Packaging with Certainty – A Best Practice Guide”. The guide is intended for food contact material (FCM) producers using printing inks and explains how design, production and storage of FCMs affect migration of printing inks into foods. Migration of printing inks has been of concern over the last few years, notably due to the detection of isopropyl thioxanthone (ITX; CAS 83846-86-0) and 4-methylbenzophenone (CAS 134-84-9) in the ppm range in dry foods. Over 6000 substances are used in printing inks.
