In a press release published on July 14, 2020, liquor manufacturer Diageo announced the development of what is being described as “the world’s first ever 100% plastic free paper-based spirits bottle, made entirely from sustainably sourced wood.” The bottle is claimed to be fully recyclable and meeting food-safety standards. It is set to be released publicly in Jonnie Walker brand whisky in early 2021. A partnership with food manufacturers Unilever and PepsiCo within the Pulpex consortium will also see bottles based on the same technology used across certain products sold by these two firms.

Simon Lowden, Chief Sustainability Officer at PepsiCo, commented on the announcement that “innovative solutions and partnerships are critical to driving meaningful progress toward a circular economy. The Pulpex consortium is well positioned to deliver sustainable packaging at scale and across industries, having impact beyond what any organization could achieve alone. We’re proud to be a part of it.”
