The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) considers the polyethylene teretphthalate (PET) post-consumer recycling process “Cumapol” safe for food contact materials in a scientific opinion published April 9, 2013 (RECYC085). According to the EFSA Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF) the 4 step procedure is able to decontaminate post-consumer PET sufficiently to ensure migration limits below 0.1µg/kg food. The recycled PET shall not contain more than 5% non-food PET. The scientific opinion responded to a request by the Dutch Ministry for Health, Welfare and Sport, which had submitted the request on behalf of Cumapol Emmen BV.
