On May 13, 2019, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes and Processing Aids (CEP Panel) published the minutes of the ninth meeting of its Working Group (WG) on Phthalates, which was held on April 26, 2019 by phone conference.

During the meeting, working group members reviewed and discussed the comments received during the public consultation on EFSA’s draft assessment of five phthalates (FPF reported) with “a focus on [comments received] regarding the toxicological assessment and the grouping approach.” Tasks were then distributed to experts, and the WG is to discuss revisions to the draft opinion and answers to the comments received in a future meeting. The next WG meetings will be held on May 13, 2019 and June 6-7, 2019.

In its draft opinion, EFSA established a group tolerable daily intake (TDI) of 50 µg/kg body weight (bw) per day for the four phthalates di-butylphthalate (DBP, CAS 84-74-2), butylbenzylphthalate (BBP, CAS 85-68-7), bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP, CAS 117-81-7), and di-isononylphthalate (DINP, CAS 28553-12-0). The phthalate di-isodecylphthalate (DIDP, CAS 26761-40-0) was assigned its own TDI of 150 µg/kg bw per day (FPF reported).
