On March 29, 2018, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF Panel) published the minutes of the second meeting of its Working Group (WG) on Phthalates which was held on March 8-9, 2018 in Parma, Italy.
During the meeting, EFSA’s DATA Unit presented “preliminary data on occurrence of phthalates extracted from the EFSA Food Consumption Database” to the phthalates WG who then discussed “different approaches for assessment of dietary exposure to phthalates.” Further, the phthalates WG discussed the expert feedback received regarding “the screening of the literature and appraisal of studies” to update the risk assessment of dibutyl phthalate (DBP, CAS 84-74-2), benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP, CAS 85-68-7), and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP, CAS 117-81-7) for use in food contact plastics. Also, “general considerations on the scope and content of the opinion were raised.”
The next meeting of the phthalates WG is scheduled to be held on April 18-19, 2018.
