On July 19, 2022, the European Commission announced the start of a public comment period on an initiative to facilitate better communication between EU institutions, Member States, and citizens concerning information about chemicals. If adopted, the initiative will among other changes:

  • standardize the data formats and language used for chemicals management
  • improve the flow of “chemical-monitoring data from Member States to EU bodies”
  • “remove legal barriers for the re-use of data across legislation and authorities/agencies”
  • adopt, “if appropriate,” the most open and transparent chemical data sharing rules currently within any EU legislation across all pieces of regulation (i.e. harmonize data transparency)

There are over 40 “legislative instruments” in the EU for regulating chemicals. The current initiative is part of the Commission’s efforts to bring about the EU’s Chemical’s Strategy for Sustainability goal of “one chemical – one assessment.”

Stakeholders can submit comments until August 16, 2022.
