According to a news article published by the industry news provider European Plastics News on July 2, 2014 the European Commission announced a 2025 landfill ban for recyclables. The ban forms part of efforts by the European Commission to move to a circular economy and will now be passed on to the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament for adoption. In the article, Karl.H. Foerster, executive director of the industry association Plastics Europe, states that the plastics industry would have welcomed a more ambitious approach. He is further concerned that a quantity based goal may drive plastics recyclers to focus even more on quantity versus quality.
