On January 19, 2013 the New York Times published an article on the role of endocrine disruptors in increasing obesity, as has been previously observed in animal studies. Nicholas Kristof, op-ed contributor to the New York Times, argues in this article that endocrine disruptors, of which some have been declared obesogens, may have a significant role in increasing obesity rates around the world. Contended endocrine disruptors are ubiquitous in our environment, including food packaging and consumer products. Consequently, he calls upon government to increase research into endocrine disruptors and demands that government pass the Safe Chemicals Act of 2011. This regulation draft aims to increase the safety of chemicals used in consumer products and has been stalled in the US Congress since 2011.
