On June 16, 2014 the European commission and its non-food Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) published a scientific opinion on “Nanosilver: safety, health and environmental effects and role in antimicrobial resistance”. The committee concludes that the use of nanosilver is widespread and increasing, and human exposure is relevant. Important knowledge gaps concerning the health effects mediated by nanosilver persist, and therefore further research is needed. Microbial resistance is another issue requiring more dedicated data from scientific studies.
