Aaron Brody, president and CEO of Packaging/Brody Inc. and Adjunct Professor at the University of Georgia, U.S. published an opinion piece in the April issue of the Institute of Food Technologists’ magazine in which he concludes that due to continuous uncertainty regarding safety and public pressure it is necessary to find alternatives for BPA. Existing resin alternatives are phenolics, polyesters, vinyls, acrylics and oleoresins, which may be used to contain food of specific pH ranges. Subsequently, he states that epoxy resins are still the best coatings from a functional point of view as they may contain food with a wide range of pHs and have good barrier properties. Brody concludes that with mounting public pressure, more research into alternative resins is needed.
