The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published scientific opinions considering a perfluorinated chemical and another substance safe for food contact. In the opinion published June 4, 2014 EFSA’s Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF) considers that 5-norbornene-2,3-dicarboxylic anhydride (CAS 826-62-0) is not genotoxic and may be used at levels of up to 18.3% of the final dry weight of can coatings. Migration limit of the substance and its hydrolysis products was set at 50 µg/kg food. The scientific opinion on perfluoro{acetic acid, 2-[(5-methoxy-1,3-dioxolan-4-yl)oxy]}, ammonium salt (CAS 1190931-27-1) was published June 6, 2014 and concluded that the substances may be used as a polymer production aid in the manufacture of fluoropolymers. The CEF Panel considered that there is no safety concern if the substance is used as a production aid in the production of repeated use articles at temperatures of at least 370°C.
