On November 30, 2016 the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF Panel) published the latest update of the meeting minutes of its Working Group on Food Contact Materials (WG-FCM).

The 15th meeting of the WG-FCM was held on July 5-7, 2016 in Parma, Italy. During the meeting, draft opinions on the following substances for use in FCMs were discussed: 2,3,3,4,4,5,5-heptafluoro-1-pentene (CAS 1547-26-8) (FPF reported); phosphorous acid, triphenyl ester, polymer with alpha-hydro-omega-hydroxypoly[oxy(methyl-1,2-ethanediyl)], C10-16 alkyl esters (CAS 1227937-46-3); amines, bis (hydrogenated rape-oil alkyl) methyl, N-oxides (CAS 204933-93-7); [3-(2,3-epoxypropoxy)propyl]trimethoxysilane (CAS 2530-83-8); and Monomer Cyclooctene (CAS 931-88-4). Further, the WG-FCM was “informed about the kick-off meetings on Chemical mixtures and on Nanotechnologies, organized by the EFSA Scientific Committee.” Other topics of discussion included the implementation of the principles of EFSA’s uncertainty guidance in the field of FCMs.

The 16th meeting of the WG-FCM was held by phone conference on July 22, 2016. The draft opinion on the substance phosphorous acid, triphenyl ester, polymer with alpha-hydro-omega-hydroxypoly[oxy(methyl-1,2-ethanediyl)], C10-16 alkyl esters (CAS 1227937-46-3) for use in FCMs was further discussed.

The 17th meeting of the WG-FCM was held on September 27-29, 2016 in Parma, Italy. The draft opinions on the following substances for use in FCMs were discussed during the meeting: Re-evaluation of phosphorous acid, mixed 2,4-bis(1,1- dimethylpropyl)phenyl triesters (no CAS available); dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylate (CAS 23985-75-3); dimethyl carbonate (CAS 616-38-6) for use as a monomer; isooctadecanamide (CAS 83052-84-0); and (butadiene-styrene-methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate) copolymer (CAS 25101-28-4) (FPF reported). Further, the WG-FCM was “informed about the statement on the developmental immunotoxicity of bisphenol A (BPA, [CAS 80-05-7]) adopted by the CEF Panel at their last plenary meeting” (FPF reported). Also, the WG-FCM obtained a training “to identify the uncertainties and the way how to address them in an FCM Opinion.”

The 18th meeting of the WG-FCM was held on November 8-10, 2016 in Parma, Italy. During the meeting, draft opinions on the following substances for use in FCMs were discussed: Tungsten oxide (CAS 39318-18-8); re-evaluation of phosphorous acid, mixed 2,4-bis(1,1- dimethylpropyl)phenyl triesters (Weston 705, no CAS available); re-evaluation of (perfluorobutyl)ethylene (CAS 19430-93-4); and isooctadecanamide (CAS 83052-84-0). Further, the training exercise “to identify the uncertainties and the way how to address them in an FCM Opinion” was continued.
