On April 12, 2018, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF Panel) published the latest update of the meeting minutes of its Working Group (WG) on Recycling Plastics. The 22nd meeting of the plastics recycling WG was held on March 20, 2018 by phone conference.

During the meeting, the WG discussed the additional information received regarding the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) recycling processes ‘RecyPET Hungaria’ (FPF reported). Further clarification on the additional information is required from the applicant for the completion of the risk assessment, “possibly through a technical hearing.” The WG also discussed the draft opinion on the recycling process ‘General plastic (Starlinger viscotec deCON technology)’ (FPF reported). The revised draft opinion will be discussed again and possibly adopted during the next CEF Panel meeting. Lastly, Bastiaan Schupp from the European Commission (EC) presented the EC’s plastics strategy (FPF reported) “in relation to the recycling plastic plan.”

The next meeting of the plastics recycling WG is scheduled to be held on May 14-15, 2018 in Parma, Italy.
