On January 27-28, 2020, the U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted a workshop on emerging technologies to advance research and decisions regarding the environmental health effects of microplastics. Given the widespread presence of microplastics in the environment and the limited understanding of their impact on human health and the environment, the workshop aimed “to explore how emerging technologies and research strategies could help address important environmental health questions about microplastics.” Presentations during the first day of the event provided an overview of the current knowledge on the prevalence, identification, characterization, and effects of microplastics. Speakers during the second day focused on technologies and approaches to reduce microplastics in the environment and discussed regulation and communication with the public. Video recordings of the presentations have now been made available along with printed information including presentation slides, abstracts, and speaker biographies.
