On July 3, 2021, the EU single use plastics directive (SUPD) was supposed to be transposed into national laws (FPF reported). On July 4, 2022, IK Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen, essencia, and European Plastics Converters published a press release highlighting the status of plastics bans and packaging labeling across the continent one year later. “According to research by the three associations, so far, only 13 member states have implemented the restrictions foreseen in the Directive.” 

The organizations highlighted that market fragmentation around single-use plastics is going in both directions. Some countries, in the eastern and northern reaches of the EU, have not fully incorporated the directive into national law and other countries like France and Spain have passed stricter packaging laws, especially for fruits and vegetables (FPF reported, also here).
