On December 20, 2017, the European Food Safety Authority’s (EFSA) Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF Panel) published the latest update of the meeting minutes of its Working Group on Food Contact Materials (WG-FCM). The 27th meeting of the WG-FCM was held on December 6-7, 2017 by phone conference.

During the meeting, the WG-FCM discussed the draft opinions on three substances intended for use in food contact plastics: 1) Poly((R)-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-(R)-3-hydroxyhexanoate (CAS 147398-31-0) (FPF reported); 2) amines, bis (hydrogenated rape-oil alkyl) methyl, N-oxides (CAS 204933-93-7) (FPF reported); and 3) titanium dioxide treated with fluoride modified alumina (no CAS number available). For all three substances, the WG-FCM had received additional information from the applicants. The scientific evaluation of the first and third substance is currently suspended because the WG-FCM again requires and requested additional information to complete the risk assessment. In the case of the second substance, the WG-FCM noted that it “requires clarification of the additional information provided in order to complete the risk assessment, possibly through a technical hearing.” Until then, the evaluation is also suspended.

The next meeting of the WG-FCM is scheduled to take place on February 6-8, 2018.
