On September 6, 2018, the RecyClass Platform published the “Recyclability evaluation protocol for PE films” to help assess whether polyethylene (PE) plastic films can be recycled. The RecyClass Platform was launched in May 2018 by the industry association Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE) with the aim to provide guidance to companies interested in improving the recyclability of their plastic packaging (FPF reported).

The purpose of the released protocol is “to analyze the impact of different technologies on the recyclability of the PE film and flexible packaging recycling stream,” PRE explained. The document was developed in collaboration with The Association of Plastics Recyclers (APR) and takes into account the content and methodology of APR’sBenchmark Polyethylene (PE) Films and Flexible Packaging Innovation Test Protocol.” The protocol was adapted “to the existing European standards and end-markets for recyclates,” PRE noted. Further collaborator was the independent laboratory Centexbel – VKC “to perform the recyclability tests according to the published Protocol, “ PRE informed.
